Mesothelioma Information

Mesothelioma information is not always easy to find. Many sufferers struggle to find a reliable and easy to understand source for mesothelioma information.

Mesothelioma cancer is linked to asbestos. Most of those who develop mesothelioma symptoms have worked in jobs or environments where they have been exposed to asbestos dust particles in the air. In almost every case of mesothelioma, those exposed to the asbestos do not know about it at the time - and may only get the information and become aware of it when the mesothelioma cancer shows itself.

Information: Time Delay

There is a time delay of at least twenty years (and sometimes up to fifty years) between the exposure to asbestos and the development of mesothelioma symptoms. Asbestos use is now strictly controlled by law but up to and throughout the 1970's it was almost universally used in insulation - insulating pipes, boilers, roof tiles, fireproofing courses and even in the clutches and breaks of cars and other vehicles.

New information has shown that many cases of malignant mesothelioma (mesothelioma cancer) in the United States have shown themselves in those who served in the Navy. Other workers known to be particularly at risk include plumbers, boilermakers, insulation workers, those who used fireproofing spray on steel beams and others involved mainly in the construction industries.

There is also information available that many cases seen who can give no history (or have no recollection) of being involved in any of these jobs or activities.

Information: What are mesothelioma symptoms

Malignant mesothelioma is a tumour that develops between the lung and the slippy lining layer that separates the lung from the rib cage. This slippy layer of tissue is called the pleura.

Because the mesothelioma cancer grows slowly and takes a long time to cause any symptoms, it can be difficult for a doctor to make a mesothelioma diagnosis at an early stage - the information available to the doctor from tests is simply not enough to confirm the diagnosis

The right lung is involved slightly more often than the left. Mesothelioma symptoms are often rather vague to begin with and patients often simply complain about being out of breath or of having a persistent dry cough. Many patients show no mesothelioma symptoms at all and the condition is discovered by chance when a chest x-ray is done for another reason.

Medical information sources show that rarer mesothelioma symptoms include fever, sweats at night or weight loss.

Abdominal mesothelioma arises when the disease either starts in the abdomen instead of the chest - or spreads behind the diaphragm muscle to cause problems around the organs in the abdominal cavity.

Information: Mesothelioma Diagnosis

The diagnosis of mesothelioma is confirmed by taking a sample (a biopsy) of the pleura or from a sample of the fluid between the lung and the pleura - when fluid separates the lung from its lining it is called a pleural effusion.

Chest x-ray often raises suspicions about the mesothelioma diagnosis in the first instance and doctors may also organise CT scans or MRI scans of the chest and abdomen.

The pathology information needed for is required for final confirmation can only come from pleural sample biopsy

Sometimes a special flexible camera is used to look inside the chest cavity so that the mesothelioma specialist can work out exactly what is going on.

I have seen many patients present with mesothelioma symptoms but chest conditons are not my main area of expertise. The articles below will provide information and answer many common questions about mesothelioma and will guide you towards further reading.

Information: Asbestos and Cancer

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos related cancer, you may want to seek legal advice. Typical legal settelements can reach five million dollars.

How Is Mesothelioma Treated?

There are various procedures used for the treatment of mesothelioma. The type of treatment depends on the location of the cancer, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health.

Risk of Mesothelioma

The risk of asbestos-related disease increases with heavier exposure to asbestos and longer exposure time. However, some individuals with only brief exposures have developed mesothelioma.

Choose a mesothelioma attorney

Choosing an attorney or a lawyer to fight your case if you have mesothelioma can be a difficult and stressful process. Many legal firms say that they deal in mesothelioma settlement cases but how do you choose between them? Will they all conduct your compensation lawsuit equally well - what's the difference and how do you find out?
